The Steinbach Regional varsity boys basketball team will meet the Dakota Lancers Friday night in Winnipeg in the South Central Athletic Conference final. Khean Koeuth poured in 26 points and Rovic Duaqui chipped in with 19 points and two steals as the SRSS defeated the Lions 69-59 at Glenlawn in the SCAC semifinals. Fara Fola-Bolumole had eight points, 13 rebounds and seven blocked shots for the Sabres. The SRSS varsity girls lost their semifinal 62-37 to Glenlawn.

The Steinbach Huskies avoided elimination Wednesday night in Oakbank. Eric Adams scored twice as Steinbach edged Springfield 4-3. Ian Friesen and Ethan Plett also scored for the Huskies who cut the Xtreme's lead in the best-of-seven Hanover Tache Junior Hockey League semifinal to three games to two. Plett's shorthanded goal with 1:29 left in the third period extended Steinbach's lead to 4-2. Brayden Kizlik had a pair of goals for Springfield. The other went to Nicolas Daymond. Game six goes Saturday night at the T.G. Smith Centre.

 

The Brandon Wheat Kings and Winnipeg Ice both lost at home Wednesday night. Brandon fell 7-6 to the Regina Pats. Brett Hyland and Nolan Ritchie had two goals each for the Wheat Kings. Riley Ginnell and Nate Danielson had the other Brandon goals. Danielson was stretchered off the ice late in the third period following a collision into the end boards. After a quick response by the training staff from both teams, and the Wheat Kings team doctor, Danielson was stretchered off and taken to Brandon Hospital as a precaution. Winnipeg dropped a 4-3 decision to Lethbridge. Liekit Reichle scored the only goal of the shootout for the Hurricanes. Zachary Benson, Chase Wheatcroft and Connor McClennon did the goal scoring for the Ice. Lethbridge lead 3-0 after the first period. The game was tied 3-3 after 40 minutes.

 

Zone 13 champion Kelia Haskins of Edward Schreyer School in Beausejour is competing at the 2022 Provincial High School Curling Championships in Hamiota and Kenton. Colin Desaulniers and Lauren Evason of Gabrielle Roy are representing Zone 13 in the Provincial Mixed Doubles Championship that begins Friday.

 

Wheelchair curler Ina Forrest of Spallumcheen, B.C., and Para hockey player Greg Westlake of Oakville, Ontario will be Canada's flag-bearers when Team Canada enters the National Indoor Stadium for the opening ceremony of the 2022 Beijing Paralympics on Friday. Forrest will compete at her fourth consecutive Games. She won gold in 2010 in Vancouver and 2014 in Sochi. Westlake helped Canada win gold in 2006 in Turin and bronze in 2014. 49 athletes will be competing for Canada in Beijing. Wheelchair curler Dennis Thiessen of Crystal City, a two-time Paralympian and member of the Canadian Curling Hall of Fame, is the oldest team member at age 60.
