Lucas Thompson scored his second goal of the game with 7:06 left in the third period as Steinbach Regional edged the Vincent Massey Trojans 3-2 at the Silverstone Arena in Winnipeg. Cody Neufeld also found the back of the net for the SRSS. Theoren Koop chipped in with two assists. The Sabres are 2-0 to start the 2022-23 Winnipeg High School Hockey League season and will play their home opener Wednesday, October 26th against the St. Paul's Crusaders at the T.G. Smith Centre.


The top two teams in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League's East Division are in the Canadian Junior Hockey League's Top 20 Rankings. The Portage Terriers (10-1) moved up a spot from seven to six. The Steinbach Pistons (10-2) dropped from nine to number 11. The Ontario Junior Hockey League's Milton Menace replaced the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League's Battlefords North Stars as the number one nationally ranked team.


The Brandon Wheat Kings dropped a 5-2 decision to the Blazers in Kamloops. Nate Danielson and Logen Hammett did the goal scoring for the Wheat Kings who have a 3-2 record on their eight-game road trip. Matthew Savoie and Briley Wood scored two minutes apart early in the third period and Zach Benson had a shorthanded second period goal as the Winnipeg Ice held on for a 3-2 victory over the Royals in Victoria. 


Hockey Canada has announced the three Canadian rosters that will compete at the 2022 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge, November 3rd to 12th in Langley and Delta, B.C. Swift Current Broncos defenseman Josh Fluker of Boissevain and Broncos forward Clarke Caswell of Brandon will play for Team Canada Black. Brandon Wheat Kings forward Caleb Hadland of Sylvan Lake, Alberta is on Team Canada Red's roster. Wheat Kings forward Roger McQueen of Saskatoon and Brandon defenseman Charlie Elick of Calgary will play for Team Canada White along with Edmonton Oil Kings forward Gavin Hodnett and Lethbridge Hurricanes defenseman Tristen Doyle of Winnipeg. The tournament, which returns for the first time since 2019, will feature three Canadian teams matching up against Czechia, Finland, Sweden and the United States. Each team will play six preliminary-round games with the top four in the standings advancing to the medal round. 


Garreth Rayner of the Providence University College Pilots is the Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference Male Athlete of the Week. The Pilots center midfielder scored five goals in two matches against the Assiniboine Community College Cougars and the Université de Saint-Boniface Les Rouges. Providence (8-0-3) is riding a six-match winning streak and is only three points back of the defending champion Brandon University Bobcats. The Pilots host the Bobcats on the final day of regular season this Sunday in a match that could decide first place in the 2022 MCAC men’s soccer season. 


The Winnipeg Blue Bombers released five players from the practice roster including American defensive lineman Bronson Massie, American defensive back Raleigh Texada, American offensive lineman Liam Fornadel, American offensive lineman Payton Muljo and National offensive lineman Jakub Szott. The 14-3 Blue Bombers, who have clinched first place in the CFL West Division, are enjoying their third bye week. Winnipeg will play its regular season finale against the B.C. Lions at IG Field on Friday, October 28th.
