The Steinbach Regional varsity boys basetball team fell 80-58 to the Nelson McIntyre Torchbearers. Rovic Duaqui had 20 points and seven rebounds, Ben Gigolyk went five-for-10 beyond the arc and finished with 15 points while Bensen Gruninger pulled down 15 rebounds. The Sabres, who finished third at the Garden Valley Zodiacs tournament this past weekend, have a 1-2 record in the South Central Athletic Conference and will host the Leo Remillard Renards on Wednesday.


Steinbach Regional dropped a 3-2 decision to the Lord Selkirk Royals Monday at the Selkirk Recreation Complex. Dominic Rooney had both goals for the Sabres who have 11 wins, five regulation losses, two overtime losses and a shootout loss in the Winnipeg High School Hockey League’s Platinum Promotions Division.


The top two teams in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League's East Division remain in the Canadian Junior Hockey League's Top 20 Rankings. The second place Steinbach Pistons fell from number 9 to number 12. The division leading Portage Terriers remain at number 10. The Cobras de Terrebonne (LHJAAAQ), who have gone on an impressive 19-1 run in their past 20 games, as well as sporting a 31-3-0-0 overall mark, are the number one nationally ranked team replacing the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League's Battlefords North Stars who fell to number four in the rankings. 


Carson Bjarnason of the Brandon Wheat Kings has been named the Western Hockey League Goaltender of the Week. Bjarnason, the top-ranked North American Goaltender by Central Scouting ahead of the 2023 NHL Draft, registered a pair of road victories for the Wheat Kings this past week, posting a 1.00 goals-against average, .964 save percentage and one shutout along the way. The 17-year-old Carberry native began his week with a 34-save performance Friday as Brandon beat the Calgary Hitmen 4-2. Two days later, Bjarnason turned aside all 19 shots he faced to earn his third shutout of the season, helping the Wheat Kings defeat the Edmonton Oil Kings 2-0.


Ridly Greig has been recalled by the Ottawa Senators. The former Brandon Wheat Kings captain has 12 goals and 11 assists with the American Hockey League's Belleville Senators this season. The Lethbridge native spent his entire junior career with the Wheat Kings where he played in 183 career games scoring 76 goals and 115 assists in four seasons. Greig was selected in the 1st round of the 2021 NHL Entry Draft by Ottawa.


The Manitoba Moose have reassigned forward Isaac Johnson to the ECHL's Newfoundland Growlers. Johnson, 23, appeared in seven games with the Moose this season and tallied one assist. The forward also posted 20 points (8G, 12A) in 14 games with the Growlers and recorded a plus-13 rating through those contests. Johnson has suited up in 18 total AHL games, all with Manitoba, and has posted five points (1G, 4A) in those outings.


The Winnipeg Blue Bombers signed Canadian offensive lineman Asotui Eli to a three-year contract. Eli was selected by the Blue Bombers in the fourth round, 34th overall, in the 2019 CFL Draft and appeared in five games in his first season. Following the cancellation of the 2020 CFL campaign due to the global pandemic, Eli returned in 2021 to play a key role as a rotational component along the club’s veteran offensive line, while suiting up for all 14 regular season games – including four starts - plus the Western Final. He did not play in 2022.


It's practice day today at the East St. Paul Arena for the 12 teams who will be competing at the 2023 Provincial Scotties Tournament of Hearts. The opening draw is Wednesday morning at 8:30 a.m. Mackenzie Zacharias of the Altona Curling Club won the 2022 Provincial Scotties in Carberry and this season added two-time World champion Jennifer Jones to the teams lineup. 

 

The Provincial Junior Curling Championships wrapped up Saturday at the Portage Curling Club. 2023 Provincial Junior Men's champion Jordon McDonald will join Clayton Dreger on This Week in Curling which airs Tuesdays at 5:15 p.m. on AM 1250 Radio.
