The Provincial Junior Varsity Volleyball Championships begin today. Both Steinbach Regional teams are at the AAAA championship in Brandon. The SRSS girls are in a Pool with Dakota, Vincent Massy (Wpg) and Fort Richmond. The SRSS boys are in a Pool with Mile Macdonell, Daniel McIntyre and Vincent Massey (Wpg). Niverville is at the AAA girls championship in Altona. The Panthers are in a Pool with Neelin, Linden Christian and the host Miller Aces. Steinbach Christian is at the AAA boys championship in Winkler. The Flames are in a Pool with the host Northlands Parkway Nighthawks, St. John’s and R.D. Parker of Thompson. The Gabrielle Roy Les Roys are at the A/AA championships. Gabrielle Roy girls are in Russell and are in a Pool with Gilbert Plains, Rosenort and Reston. Gabrielle Roy boys are in Hamiota and are in a Pool with MacGregor, Goose Lake and Rosenort.


Theoren Koop had three goals and two assists as Steinbach Regional defeated the Dakota Lancers 5-2. Drew Heide and Mark Plett also scored for the Sabres who improved to 6-2-2-1 in the Winnipeg High School Hockey League’s Platinum Promotions Division.


Travis Hensrud and Dawson Milliken each had a goal and an assist and Cole Plowman made 14 saves as the Steinbach Pistons blanked the Winnipeg Freeze 6-0 at the T.G. Smith Centre. Noah Szabo, Davin Griffin, Leo Chambers and Nicholas Mikan also scored for the Pistons who are 19-4 and lead the Manitoba Junior Hockey League’s East Division by two points over the Winkler Flyers.


Jenna Sellen had the lone Eastman goal in the Selects 5-1 loss to the Winnipeg Ice. Eastman netminder Orieanna Kennedy made 35 saves.


Zach Benson scored the go-ahead goal 5:16 into the third period as the Winnipeg Ice shaded the Lethbridge Hurricanes 3-2. Ty Nash and Connor McClennon with his 17th of the season also scored for the Ice.


The Winnipeg Jets gave up three third period goals and lost 6-1 to the Minnesota Wild in St. Paul. Kyle Connor had the lone goal for the Jets. Marcus Foligno scored twice for the Wild.


Canada lost 1-0 to Belgium in their Group Stage opener at the World Cup in Qatar. Michy Batshuayi scored in the 44th minute for Belgium. Canada had a chance to take the lead in the 10th minute. Alphonso Davies’ penalty attempt was stopped by Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. Canada’s next match is Sunday against Croatia.


Manitoba champions Zachary Wasylik has a 4-0 record and Lisa Birchard is 3-1 at the 2022 Everest Curling Club Championships at the Ice Palace in the West Edmonton Mall.
