If all goes according to plan, all streets in Steinbach should be cleared by Thursday noon.

Randy Reimer is Head of Public Works. He says snowplows were out Monday morning at four o'clock after more than two inches of snow fell in Steinbach over the weekend. Reimer says the fresh snow combined with the wind warranted a citywide cleanup.

But Reimer admits it has been a challenge.

"The streets are packed pretty hard and it's pretty slow going right now with cold temperatures and hydraulics on the equipment and everything working a little slower," he says.

Reimer explains when it gets this cold, the snow really packs down on the streets. He notes they have a tougher time cutting down to the asphalt and definitely go through more sand in these conditions.

Reimer says they may be able to wrap up snow clearing efforts by the end of Wednesday, but for sure by Thursday noon they should revert back to cleaning up snow piles at different facilities as well as cleaning up street corners and removing snow off boulevards.

Not only is the cold tough on equipment, but Reimer says the wind is forcing snowplows to hit some streets multiple times. He says this is especially bad on the north side of the city, including Park Road, Acres Drive, Industrial Road and some of the developments on the west side.

"And also sidewalks," he says. "With the winds that we've had, we've had to run them a number of times because they just keep blowing in."

Snow clearing equipment has generally been running from 4 am to 5 pm each day this week. Reimer asks motorists to refrain from parking on the street until after plows have been through.
