A scientist with Environment Canada says the ingredients are there for severe weather in southeastern Manitoba this afternoon.
Christy Climenhaga says this follows what was a night of storms in western Manitoba on Tuesday. She notes Environment Canada received a report of a possible tornado just southwest of Deleau, near Belleview. Climenhaga says Environment Canada is investigating after receiving a photo and video of the event from Tuesday.
As for today, Climenhaga says the main threat for areas east of the Red River Valley is strong winds, large hail and heavy downpours. She notes there is also the possibility of some storms with rotation.
According to Climenhaga, the weather is very unstable right now in the region. She notes that any severe weather that rolls through will likely happen this afternoon. Climenhaga says a line of storms already tracked through the Winnipeg area earlier today.
"You could see some showers on and off today," she says. "But better chance of a thunderstorm probably through this afternoon."
Climenhaga says rainfall totals for today could vary depending on the track of the storms. She notes a storm could very easily dump 10 to 15 millimetres.
"If a storm kind of moves very slowly over you, you could see higher amounts," she clarifies. "It really just depends on how these storms set up."
Meanwhile, today's rain could really be a sign of things to come for the rest of this week. Climenhaga says there is rain in the forecast on and off for the next few days.
"We do have a system rolling through for the weekend, which looks to bring a decent amount of rainfall into more Central Manitoba," she says.
Climenhaga says some of their models are showing the low-pressure system to track a little further south into southeastern Manitoba. She notes rainfall totals could be 20 to 40 millimetres, with higher amounts in thunderstorms.
Even with the rain, temperatures are still expected to be near normal for this time of year, with the exception of Friday. Currently, Environment Canada is calling for highs of 27 and 29 degrees the next two days and then 22 degrees on Friday. The weekend is expected to have highs in the mid-20s. The normal high for this time of year is 27 degrees.
