Provencher MP and Justice Minister Vic Toews is shocked and saddened by the police shootings in Winnipeg Thursday night.
3 officers are in hospital after a late-night drug raid.  A 12 - year veteran is listed in guarded condition after requiring abdominal surgery.  A 17-year veteran is stable after surgery for a wound to his forearm, the third officer is in stable condition with a wound to his lower leg.  No names have been released at this time.  21-year-old Daniel Anderson is charged with attempted murder.  Toews says this incident heightens the need for tougher penalties for gun crimes.  He extends the government's best wishes to the officers and their families during this difficult time.  Meantime, Toews is urging opposition Members of Parliament to support his proposed measures to toughen the justice system.
