Two top tier teams went punch for punch on Friday night and after 65 minutes of hockey, Carter Loney and Codey Behun scored in the shootout to give Steinbach a 3-2 win over the visiting Dauphin Kings.

It was a make up game that was forced back in the calendar due to a winter storm and with both teams coming in hot, fans were sure to be treated to a great contest.

Both teams came out fast and generated a couple of scoring chances early in the first period. Dauphin crashed the net and forced Matt Lenz into making a couple of big saves in tight to keep it scoreless.

The Pistons would get on the board first thanks to Christian Riemer who scored his first as a Steinbach Piston to make it 1-0. The goal was generated thanks to a face off win by Troy Beauchemin who picked up the lone assist on the Riemer wrister, which was the only marker of the period.

In the second, Steinbach got into penalty trouble. They were saddled with three straight two minute minors, all with under 7 minutes remaining in the second period.

Eventually, the penalty kill unit surrendered a goal and as Dauphin tied the game, the Pistons took yet another minor penalty meaning the road team would start the third with the man advantage after the second period ended 1-1.

With the power play unit out to start the period, a set face off play by the Kings at center ice sent them streaking into the Pistons zone and gave them a great chance but Lenz was able to stretch out and make a spectacular save to keep it tied up.

A new look line of Max Neil, Kyle Bettens and Codey Behun would combine to get a lead for the home team.

After Neil dumped the puck in for a hard skating Bettens to fish out of the corner, he fired a pass to Behun who busted right through the zone untouched and hammered home his team leading 7th of the year to push Steinbach out in front 2-1.

More penalty trouble cost Steinbach the lead as Dauphin converted again on a man advantage to knot things up 2-2.

Steinbach pushed hard in the final five minutes of the third, coming close a number of times but despite putting 20 shots on goal, they couldn't force one over the line and the teams were off to overtime.

The extra frame solved nothing so fans would be treated to a shootout.

After both teams first shooters were stopped, Dauphin managed to grab the shootout lead, putting the pressure on the Pistons' Carter Loney who faked a forehand shot before pulling the puck in tight and burying a backhander to even things up.

Lenz made a big save on Dauphin's third shooter, setting the stage for Behun to be the hero.

Behun took the puck wide to the right and changed speeds before slipping home the game winner to give Steinbach the 3-2 victory.

Lenz, who was coming off being named MJHL Goalie of the Month earlier in the day, showed exactly why he earned that honor as he made 28 saves. A number of which were above average opportunities against.

Steinbach's power play finished 0-3 while the penalty kill surrendered a pair of goals finishing 4-6.

With the win, the Pistons record is now 10-2-1-1 for 22 points. They have played the least amount of games out of anyone in the league yet sit only one point out of top spot in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League.

Steinbach will have another home game on Saturday night as they welcome in the Selkirk Steelers. Game time 7:30 pm.
