It wasn't the most exciting game at the start, but the Steinbach Pistons and Portage Terriers crammed quite a bit of excitement in the end, where the Terriers eventually pulled out a 1-0 overtime win.
First period
Portage came out strong in the opening couple of shifts, bringing pressure and forcing the Pistons' defenders to commit some turnovers. Steinbach made the adjustments as they began to move the puck a little quicker and smoothly.
No offense to speak of, but Steinbach took a 10-5 shot lead into the first intermission.
Steinbach's Chris Quizi was very solid in the limited times he was called into action, with his best save coming off a partial breakaway, locking down the five-hole, and keeping the game scoreless.
Second period
Much like the first, offensive opportunities were few and far between, but when the Terriers did get chances, Quizi had the answers.
The 20-year-old goalie made save after save, especially on the penalty kill, refusing to let Portage grab a lead.
A questionable call in the final minutes of the period put Steinbach down to five defenders. After some discussion, the officials made the call that Zhenya Miles would be assessed a major penalty and a game misconduct for head contact on a hit that appeared to be a clean, hard check at the blue line.
As if trying to kill off a five-minute major wasn't enough, the Pistons took another penalty, giving Portage a five-on-three for a full two minutes.
Quizi and the penalty killers got the job done, killing off the five-on-three and getting out of the period tied 0-0 with only seconds remaining on the Miles major.
Third period
Steinbach got the game back to five on five, keeping the penalty kill perfect.
Charlie Velner got into a pushing match with a Terrier that eventually boiled over and Velner dropped the gloves, handling the Terrier forward in a solid tilt.
After the Velner fight, Steinbach went down to four defenders for the rest of the game.
Both teams picked up the intensity, pushing to find a goal, but neither goalie blinked.
From shots with traffic to jam plays in the crease, the netminders remained perfect, and the game would need overtime.
Overtime
In the extra frame, Steinbach had a glorious chance to end the game, but they were unable to slide a loose puck home, and the Terriers took advantage, racing down the other way and scoring the only goal of the game, claiming a 1-0 overtime win.
Game notes
Quizi was the best Pistons player, doing everything he could to give his team a chance to win. He was named the games second star after making 29 saves.
Steinbach's power play had a tough night, finishing 0-6, while the penalty kill was a perfect 4-4.
Up next
Steinbach will have a couple of days away from the rink and will hit the ice for practice on Monday. Their next game is set for Tuesday night in Winnipeg, when they will battle the Monarchs.
