Steinbach RCMP phone lines are ringing off the hook with people reporting their experience with the latest phone scam.
Corporal Bill Richards says they're well aware of it and their technological crimes unit is working on stopping it.  A caller tells you that you've won a trip to the Caribbean and asks you to press 9 to proceed. But by pressing 9, you enable the caller to access your line for long distance calls. It's the businesses he's most concerned about because their long distance information can be accessed by the caller, while residential information cannot be gained.  What should business do if they fell victim to the scam? Corporal Richards says the best thing is to contact MTS and ask for direction.  Meantime, he says the local detachment is unable to do anything about the situation.
