Roadside crews are working quickly to clean up a spill of hot asphalt that happened along the Trans Canada Highway near Dufresne yesterday.

A provincial spokesperson informs that spills of this nature need to be addressed immediately to reduce any negative effect the chemicals could have on the environment such as contaminating soil or waterways. In this case, an excavation crew is already on-site digging up any affected earth to prevent the asphalt from seeping further. Future tests on the soil will be done to ensure all hazardous materials have been removed from the area.

The responsibility and cost of the clean-up fall on the operator of the truck and trailer who was found at fault for the spill. Sources indicate the work is expected to be done by this coming weekend.
