The Mennonite Heritage Village (MHV) has been working hard restoring key pieces of their grounds.

Shelter reconstruction

Robert Goertzen, executive director at MHV, says the (unofficially named) Blatz Buggy Shelter is in need of some repairs.

“It’s been a shelter structure for a long time, and we recognize that the rafters and roof were in need of replacements... So that’s a project that’s been ongoing,” he says.

Goertzen notes the help of wonderful volunteers has helped streamline the process.

“Together with a couple of the trades that are coming in to help us, we’re hoping to have that building completed before it freezes up.”

The team is focused on securing heritage wooden structures before winter to prevent damage and keep out animals that may seek shelter.

Looking ahead

“We’re just making sure that everything is in good shape so that when winter does come, the buildings won’t deteriorate further,” says Goertzen.

There are a few projects that won’t be done in time for winter, but can wait until spring.

"We’re looking into which buildings need a new coat of paint. We’re doing evaluations on any other repairs that are needed.”

2025 reflections

He notes the MHV has had a fantastic year keeping the grounds in tip-top shape with the help of their gardeners.

“We’re very happy with the way things are looking right now, but we are always looking ahead at the next buildings that need attention,” Goertzen explains.
