The Steinbach Pistons were dealt their first loss of the season but did manage to pick up a point in as 3-2 shootout loss to the Selkirk Steelers on Friday night.

Ty Naaykens gave Steinbach a lead in the first period as the forward showed off his hockey IQ by getting away from coverage and hiding behind the net as he took a pass and forced the Steelers goalie to look the wrong way before tucking home his third of the year. Codey Behun and Dominic Murano collected the assists on the goal.

Despite getting a couple of power play chances, Steinbach couldn't add to the lead and went into the break up 1-0.

Penalties piled up in the second period as things started to get heated.

Both teams combined for 51 minutes in penalties which included a player from each side getting tossed from the game.

Selkirk's Tanner Hamilton took exception to a hit and went after Murano who didn't bite when Hamilton tried to get him to fight. Hamilton dropped his gloves and threw multiple punches while Murano stood tall and knew he'd earn his team a power play, which he did as Hamilton got a 5 minute major and a game misconduct.

While on the power play, the Pistons managed to get a couple of chances but couldn't find their way. With less than a minute to go in the major power play, the period came to an end. Again, the teams got tangled up in pushing and shoving. It was around the Pistons bench and Rylan Bettens got involved and he was assessed with a 2 minute minor and a game misconduct.

The third period started the same way the second period ended as Pistons forward Matt Osadick was drilled from behind by the Steelers Eric Krywy. With Osadick down (Osadick was shaken up but had the wherewithal to use his good leg to push himself away from the forming pile) Caden Triggs stepped up to take exception and stood up for his teammate getting into a tussle with Krywy.

While Krywy and Triggs both received six minutes in penalties each, Krywy was ejected for his hit on Osadick who did a little skate in the neutral zone before declairing himself good enough to continue.

Killing off several penalties throughout the game kept giving Selkirk momentum and the rough stuff early in the third seemed to really kick them into gear as they tied the game 1-1 with less than five minutes played in the period.

Murano gave Steinbach the lead back as he took a wonderful pass from Blake Burr and slipped a beauty little backhand through the goalies five hole to make it 2-1. For Murano, it was his second of the year. Christian Riemer picked up an assist as well.

With only 28 seconds left in the game, the Steelers had the net empty and pushed for the equalizer which off a scramble in front, they eventually found to knot the game 2-2.

Overtime saw both team have some looks and Steinbach's penalty killers were asked to come up big killing off a minor while only allowing a couple shots against.

With the extra period solving nothing, a shootout was needed to decide a winner.

Selkirk managed to get in front on their second shot but Osadick kept the game alive for Steinbach by putting a perfect shot off the inside of the left post and in.

The Steelers completed the comeback as they scored on their final shot to come away with the bonus point, 3-2.

Thomas Couture was saddled with the loss for Steinbach. He finished the night with 33 saves.

Steinbach's power play had chances but failed to get on the scoreboard going 0-9 while the penalty kill was 4-4.

Saturday night the Pistons will look to bounce back as they head to Selkirk. The game will be on MIX 96 and SteinbachOnline.com starting with the pre-game show at 7:15 pm and the puck drop set for 7:30 pm.
