Fresh off their Tuesday night win against the Minnesota Wild, the Jets took the ice again last night against the 15-13-1 Washington Capitals. One point separated these division rivals, so this game in particular was of the utmost importance for both teams.
Caution defined most of the game. It was a chess match between two 1-2-2 forechecks ended the first period with a 0-0 tie. Shots were 14-7 in favour of the Jets with the starting line of Bryan Little, Blake Wheeler, and Jets leading scorer Evander Kane paving the with most of the scoring chances.
Winkler native Eric Fehr just could not get the puck in the net with his three shots in the first period alone. Linemates Andrew Ladd and Kyle Wellwood seemed to be heavily favouring Fehr no doubt so he could notch one against his old team. Whether it was a strength in his shoulder issue or a timing issue, Fehr did fan on a couple of key shots that could have put the Jets ahead.
After the game, head coach Claude Noel expressed his dissatisfaction with the lackluster results of the powerplay as the Jets went 0 for 4 with the man advantage. The powerplay was an indication of the struggles through most of the game offensively.
The score remained 0-0 through the second and most of the third. With overtime looming, the Capitals lodged a strong offensive effort and at 1:51 remaining put the puck behind Pavalec. The net was dislodged just prior to the puck crossing the line resulting in the goal being waved off. The Jets could not hang on after dodging that one bullet, with Alexander Ovechkin sneaking a snap shot threw Pavalec just 37 seconds later.
The Jets are back at it at home this Saturday as they play host to Teemu Selanne and the Anaheim Ducks.
