It was a long time coming for Cullen Ingebritson, but the man known as 'Jim' finally found the back of the net for his first MJHL goal, then later added a second, helping boost the Steinbach Pistons over the Waywayseecappo Wolverines 7-3 on Thursday night.
First period
Early on, Steinbach had their work boots on, hustling in on the forecheck and forcing the Wolverines into turnovers below their goal line, and generated a couple of good chances because of it.
Despite their good work, it was the Wolverines that would strike first, jumping out in front 1-0.
The rest of the period belonged to Steinbach.
An offensive zone faceoff win by Sam Noad got the puck back to Jack Greenwell, who wired a shot off the post and in for his 16th goal of the season. The marker knotted the game 1-1.
Under four minutes later, it was Noad and Greenwell connecting again, as Greenwell walked into the slot and fired home his second of the game, his 17th of the year, giving Steinbach their first lead, 2-1.
A short time later, it was Cullen Ingebritson who pounced on a puck and put a backhander on goal, knocking a puck off the post and in for his first career MJHL goal. Eric Han picked up the lone assist.
Still not done, Liam Doyle jumped up into a rush, took a nice pass from Rory Gilmour, and finished the play off by scoring his fourth of the season, extending the lead to 4-1. Brody Green, who was a thorn in the side of many Wolverines throughout the night, was given the secondary assist.
Steinbach held a 4-1 advantage on the scoreboard and a 15-10 edge in shots.
Second period
The Wolverines changed goalies to start the period, and a power play to start the period gave them a boost, giving them the opportunity to start building momentum.
While they didn't score, they did control much of the play and earned another power play.
It went right down to the second, but the Wolverines did manage to score just as the power play expired, bringing the game to 4-2.
Luke Bogart would restore the three-goal advantage as the sneaky defender turned on the jets through middle ice, received a little chip pass from Han, and broke in all alone, finishing off the play by scoring his second of the season, making it a 5-2 game.
Easton Thvedt, Steinbach's starting goaltender, was sensational in the second, battling throughout and keeping his team in the fight. The 18-year-old made several incredible saves, keeping his team in front heading into the third period.
Third period
Things were relatively calm to start the third, until the Pistons were called for a questionable penalty, giving the Wolverines a man-advantage, which they did not squander, scoring to make it a 5-3 game.
Two penalties in quick succession put Steinbach on a 5-on-3 advantage, and they did not let the opportunity pass them by.
First, it was Zhenya Miles, taking a pass from Noad and wristing home his sixth of the season, giving Steinbach a 6-3 lead. Greenwell capped of a tidy three-point night by picking up the secondary assist.
Then it was Ingebritson again scoring into a yawning cage for his second of the night, sealing the deal with the 7-3 marker. Gilmour and Brett Kaiser were given the assists on the final goal of the game.
