Hospitals in Steinbach and Ste. Anne both delivered more babies in 2023 than 2022.
According to Southern Health-Santé Sud, there were 453 births last year at Bethesda Regional Health Centre in Steinbach. That is up from 2022 when there were 420 babies delivered at that hospital. Over the last 10 years, the number of births has fluctuated at that hospital, peaking at 482 in 2014 and dipping as low as 415 in 2021.
At Ste. Anne Hospital, the regional health authority (RHA) is reporting 50 births there, compared to 49 one year earlier. It should be noted that the obstetrical program at that hospital was temporarily suspended on December 1st, 2023 due to physician retirements and a need to sustain primary care services at that site. According to Southern Health-Santé Sud, all efforts are being made to recruit physicians willing to provide obstetrical services at that hospital.
Meanwhile, when it comes to the most popular baby names in 2023, the RHA says it does not keep those statistics. Neither does the province for specific regions of Steinbach or Ste. Anne. However, the province has released its list of most common boys and girls names for all of Manitoba in 2023.
