Steinbach Pistons goaltender Will Hambley made 23 saves while Quinton Pepper had a goal and an assist in Steinbach's 3-0 win over the Selkirk Steelers, giving them a 2 games to 1 series lead.

Coming off a loss in game 2, the Pistons wanted to get back to more of their style of using their speed to create chances.

Throughout the first, the Steelers did a great job limiting chances in front of their goal, keeping Steinbach to the outside. They also clogged up the neutral zone which forced Steinbach to dump and chase instead of carrying the puck into the zone with their trademark speed.

Credit to the Steelers defenders as they were able to survive the forecheck and move pucks effectively out of the zone.

Hambley wasn't overly tested until the final minute when a slight breakdown in the defensive zone allowed the Steelers to put a puck towards the top of the crease but the 19-year-old netminder held his ground and kept it scoreless.

The 0-0 draw was finally broken in the second period thanks to Pepper.

Braden Birnie got the play started by keeping a puck in near the blue line, he managed to flip a pass towards Zach Power who was near the slot. Power took the pass on his backhand and flipped it to a cutting Pepper who went forehand to backhand and in for his first playoff goal.

Selkirk pushed for the equalizer as they crashed towards the crease. A bouncing puck off the end boards came back out in front but Hambley and the Pistons defenders bent but didn't break, clearing the puck away as it passed close by the far post and into the corner.

It remained 1-0 through two periods.

In the third, the Steelers came within inches of getting the game back to even but a deflection hit off the base of the post before being cleared by the defenders.

As time ticked away, Steinbach got an insurance marker.

Cooper Rice started the play by dumping in the puck from center ice. Nate Goodbrandson went in on the forecheck and used his size to win the puck battle. Jack Rogers came crashing in as well and eventually the puck found its way to the front to a waiting Rice who fired home his first of the playoffs to give Steinbach a 2-0 lead. Goodbrandson and Rogers were credited with the helpers.

As the third wound down, the Steelers pulled the goalie. Pepper won a board battle in his zone and flipped a puck out to the neutral zone where Travis Hensrud broke in on a partial breakaway, sealing the deal with the 3-0 marker.

The horn sounded and the fans went home happy with the Pistons getting back out in front in the series 2-1.

Hambley picked up his first career playoff shutout, making 23 saves.

The penalty kill for Steinbach was 1-1 while the power play was 0-1, although it had just 30 seconds to work with towards the end of the game.

Game 4 is set for Sunday evening in Selkirk. The pre-game show on MIX 96 and SteinbachOnline.com will be at 5:45 pm and the puck will drop at 6:00 pm.
