Last year's Division One playoff champions

After a very successful first season, registration for year two is ongoing for the Steinbach Futsal League.

Futsal is a modified version of indoor soccer which uses a smaller ball and boundary lines.  Last year the Futsal League had two divisions, consisting of six and four teams.  Both men and women were allowed to play in either division, although Organizer Andrew Harder is optimistic they will have enough women to form their own division this year.

"We're looking actually to expand," Harder says.  "For the second year we want to add a women's division.  So that means we will probably keep the same teams from last year and then add the women's division.  So I'm expecting to have at least 16 teams, but it's possible we have 20 and maybe even 24 if there's enough interest."

The league operates out of the Steinbach Bible College gymnasium, and as the league grows Harder is hopeful they will be able to add a second gym to allow for easier scheduling.  He explains what makes futsal appealing to those who play it.

"It's first of all indoor soccer, in Canada it's difficult to lay year round so you have that option to play indoors," Harder describes.  "It is also very popular because it is very much a controlled game and you can learn many skills you can use in outdoor soccer as well."

Team registration for year two has a deadline of September 2nd, however there is a second deadline on September 19th although it comes with a late fee.  Harder adds they are holding an informational meeting on August 20th at 7pm at Steinbach Bible College.  He notes they also have an up-to-date Facebook page and website for those who are interested but can't make it to the meeting.
