The La Broquerie Community Development Corporation, or SDC, will be unveiling a brand new outdoor fitness park next week near their ball diamonds.

Richard Turenne is the project coordinator for the La Broquerie SDC. He says there is a real need for a facility like this in their community.

"We have a gap in services to keep people active. There is a ton of stuff to do that is fee-based, why not make a nice station here that is wheelchair accessible really to keep people active from 14 and up. Through the study, we found out that kids have quite a few play structures in schools but there is nothing that is public and could keep a huge demographic of people physically fit."

Turenne says he consulted with quite a number of community groups before going forward with this fitness park including schools and local sports clubs. He notes the new facility has stationary exercise equipment such as recumbent bikes, hand pedals, and gliders but also has some more unique features.

"There are a series of obstacle structures, kind of American Ninja Warrior inspired. There is climbing walls, balance beams, monkey bars, tire runs, cargo nets, free-standing ropes that you have to Tarzan your way through, benches for, and box jumps. That kind of activity, and it is conducive to an event. I could challenge my buddy and say let's go run the gauntlet here or you could do time trials if you want."

Turenne says they really tried to take a wide approach when building this new park so that it can be used by a large portion of La Broquerie residents. He notes it will also be accessible to every language.

"Everything is labeled in English and French and if you don’t have any of those as a language then it is all pictograms, these ones are very instructive so you can see them and you know what you should be doing on these facilities."

Turenne says the new fitness park will officially be opened to the public during a ceremony on June 21st at 1:00 P.M.
