Although it may seem early to tell, things are looking optimistic for winter wheat crops.

Brian Dueck of Seine River Seed Farm says after getting little snow last year and the extreme freeze/thaw cycle from the year before, this latest snowfall is very comforting.

"The amount of snow that has stayed on the field has been quite surprising," says Dueck. He notes there has been some snow drifting but adds, for the most part, there are a couple of inches covering everything.

"So far I’m very optimistic on it."

"I think we’ve had enough snow cover that we haven’t been worried about it surviving so far. It’ll be more towards spring if it all ices over then that’ll be more of the concern than this cold now."

Dueck says, on the other hand, the talk around the farming community as of late is the price of canola and soybeans has gone down because of the ongoing trade negotiations between the US and China. He notes the US currently has an oversupply of the two commodities which have brought prices down here in Canada as well.
