A conference next weekend in Winnipeg will tackle the subject of sexual abuse and misconduct by church leaders. It is called '#CHURCHTOO' and is being hosted by Mennonite Church Manitoba, the Mennonite Brethren Church of Manitoba, Mennonite Central Committee and Canadian Mennonite University. Rick Neufeld, Director of Leadership Ministries with Mennonite Church Manitoba, explains what they hope to achieve with the event.

"The aim of this conference is to have an opportunity to have a conversation regarding some of the sexual abuse and misconduct that has taken place in the church over our history, over the past, and to also acknowledge and realize that the church is not immune from sexual abuse and misconduct. Although often avoided, we simply can't neglect or deny the reality that exists."

Neufeld adds it will also be an opportunity to listen and to learn, especially from those who may have been impacted greatly by misconduct, who are victims and survivors of sexual abuse within the church.

He says another goal is to have participants come away with a deeper understanding of the underlying factors of abuse and to be equipped to prevent and respond to these painful situations.

Neufeld says there has been interest from a number of different denominations, which was the hope of organizers.

The conference takes place May 31st and June 1st at Canadian Mennonite University.
