Hanover School Division (HSD) says classes are continuing with minimal disruption following a weekend fire in the carpentry shop at Steinbach Regional Secondary School.
An early-morning fire broke out inside the building’s carpentry shop around 1:30 a.m. on Sunday, April 19.
The Steinbach Fire Department extinguished the blaze, with help from the school’s sprinkler system.
Crews say the cause of the fire was determined to be a pile of rags on a workbench that spontaneously ignited.
Damage from the fire itself was limited, and crews returned to the station by approximately 2:30 a.m.
Hanover School Division superintendent Joe Thiessen says there is no further information to add beyond what the Steinbach Fire Department has stated.
“The extent of the damage to the carpentry shop is still being assessed by the insurer. It is too early to determine what impact, if any, this may have on educational programming; however, every effort will be made to minimize disruption,” Thiessen says.
“Classes have not been suspended. Instruction continues in alternate spaces while we assess the affected area.”
