City councillors review priorities

Steinbach city council took some time last week to review its progress on the five strategic priorities it identified a year ago.

Deputy mayor Jac Siemens says the consensus is that they've made great strides in meeting their objectives. "I would say that, if we had to pick a number. we're about 75 per cent along the way on a lot of our tasks. This is part of a four year plan, this isn't a a one year plan that we need to meet  each year. Each year we review it and each year we move towards it. I think that last year we did a good job. Over the next two or three years we're going to see it focused a little bit differently each year as we learn our role as a council and as we grow as a community and also as administration grows as well within the community," said Siemens.

On Infrastructure Renewal, council feels it has done a good job in identifying where the needs are and feels it got a lot of street and sidewalk work done this year.

On Recreation and Facility Renewal, Siemens says they are still working on a short, medium and long term plan.

On Crime Prevention and Reduction, the mayor established a task force on public safety which is due to report by year end.

On Fiscal Responsibility, Siemens says council feels good about the long term financial plan it has put into place.

And, on Advocacy, council feels it has made good strides in meeting with neighbouring councils as well as provincial and federal officials to communicate the city's wants and needs.
