City Council unanimously approved Steinbach's first-ever dog park Tuesday evening.

The final step in the process was a conditional use application. Following a quiet public hearing with no objections to the plan, Council Jac Siemens moved to approve the permit.

Siemens says residents here in Steinbach have been requesting a dog park for years and city council is happy to now fulfill those requests.

Councillor Michael Zwaagstra seconded the motion.

"It makes sense for us to provide this service to the public, and that is how we look at it, we are providing an additional service to the people of Steinbach and, of course, their dogs at a good location. L.A. Barkman Park has the advantage of being accessible, it has the advantage of being in a location where we can provide water and where there already is park space that is available that can be used. There is plenty of parking available there as well."

Council was unanimous in approving the conditional use permit.

The dog park is set to be constructed this summer just west of the newly renovated Abe’s Hill parking lot off Woodhaven Avenue.
