The St. Pauls Evangelical Lutheran Church in Steinbach rang their church bell 100 times at 4:50 P.M. this Remembrance Day to commemorate the end of World War 1.

Lloyd Barkman says this is a country-wide initiative that his fellow parishioner Bart Zweip brought to his attention. He notes starting at 4:50 P.M., near sundown, they rang their church bell every five seconds 100 times.

"Bells historically have been used to signal a great number of things, celebrations, warnings, any glad events but during the first World War, the church bells were not rung out of perhaps fear of reprisal so it was unusual to ring the church bell but when the armistice was signed and word came out that there was an end of conflict, bells all across Europe went off."

Barkman says the St. Pauls Evangelical Lutheran Church wanted to join a more global effort to show solidarity and remember conflicts and the sacrifice people have made to allow us the freedoms we enjoy right now.
