The Steinbach Fire Department wants residents to have a safe Christmas season. Deputy chief Don Smith has issued some safety tips as people prepare for the holiday.

He says, when putting up Christmas lights, there are some quick safety checks that should be done first on the cords and bulbs. "Go over them thoroughly, check them, make sure that they're not frayed or damaged or cracked. If they are, it's easier just to get rid of them and go to the Canadian Tire or wherever and just get new ones," says Smith.

He adds it's important to use the correct cord. Outdoor cords are meant to retain heat and can be a fire hazard when used indoors.

Smith also advises people to extinguish candles when leaving their homes. He notes, "They set the mood and they're very pretty to look at but they are very dangerous. Once you leave your home, or you leave a room or an area of your home, we recommend that you put them out until you return."

And Smith says, if you have a natural Christmas tree, make sure to keep it watered because dried out trees present a huge fire hazard. He explains, "If they dry out to a point and they get close to an ignition source they will burst into flame, and within a few seconds, you will have a large fire in your house."

Smith says, if everyone follows these safety procedures, we stand a better chance of getting through the Christmas season without any tragic incidents.
