Hanover Firefighters this morning extinguished a grain dryer fire just four miles west of Blumenort.

Fire Chief Paul Wiebe notes it was just before 8 o’clock when his crews were dispatched to the farm. Wiebe figures the grain that was being dried at the time must have overheated and caught fire. Passersby would not have noticed any flames, as the fire was well contained within the bin, but Wiebe says they may have observed a lot of smoke. He adds his team was able to extinguish the blaze in just over an hour.

“We usually get about half a dozen of these calls every year, usually around this time of year, so it is something we are quite familiar with,” he remarks.

While the fire likely caused a small amount of damage to the bin, Wiebe says usually these fires are quite harmless if they are dealt with quickly.
