Mayor Chris Goertzen has scrapped the traditional committee system.

Steinbach's new mayor has made some big changes at city hall. In what's believed to be a first in Manitoba, mayor Chris Goertzen has scrapped the portfolio system where councillors were appointed to various committees. Instead, he says all councillors will sit as one on the Strategic Priorities Committee. Mayor Goertzen explains this gives all councillors equal access to all of the information on any given issue so they can make an informed decision together. Meantime, he has appointed Art Rempel as deputy mayor, noting he has a lot of experience and is a good spokesperson for the city. Mayor Goertzen notes he will change deputy mayors yearly. Also, Roy Enns was appointed the city's representative on the Jake Epp Library board and Elbert Toews on the Seine/Rat River Conservation District.
