Over the weekend Golden West Radio lost a long time member of its family, one that was the voice of Southern Manitoba news for decades.

Morning News anchor and Reporter Harv Kroeker passed away at the age of 74.

Harv was heard on CFAM Radio 950, AM1250 Radio and CJRB Radio 1220 for decades going back to the 1960s. He was the voice of local, provincial and federal elections... the Flood of 97 and many, many more important points in Manitoba’s news-making history.

And just as importantly, Harv was a voice and champion for local veterans having been a key part of Remembrance Day ceremonies in Gretna, and Decoration Day ceremonies in Altona over the years. He was also part of the group that established the cenotaph in Altona's downtown in the early 1990's.

Those of us who knew Harv, knew how important it was to him to ensure those who served to protect our freedoms and way of life were recognized. Those efforts earned him a Queen Elizabeth the II Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012. At that time we spoke with him about receiving the recognition.

Over the years Harv read thousands of news stories, bringing the latest in local headlines to every corner of Southern Manitoba. His voice was synonymous with accurate, authoritative news coverage and his approach and passion for the role influenced the development of countless other reporters who have come through our halls over the years.

Harv will be missed by listeners and news-makers alike... as well as his family here at the radio station. Our thoughts and prayers are with Harv’s family.
