The head engineer for Steinbach says they have had a problem at the Old Tom Road construction site with motorists ignoring the 'road closed' signs. Phil Kalyta says that is very dangerous.

"We've had a lot of people driving through ditches and smashing barricades and all that stuff and it's just not safe to do. It's a construction zone and there are hazards there. The road is closed for a reason."

Meanwhile, Kalyta says the project is going well. The contractor is focusing on the northern part of the project around the intersection of Park Road and south up to Rams Gate. Kalyta says there's a good chance that part of the road will be paved next week and then opened to traffic with the work then shifting to the south end of the project towards Loewen Boulevard. He adds they are on a tight budget and are doing the best possible job with the money that is available.

"We are assuming the road bed is in good shape and most of it looks like it is. Where it's marginal, we're putting down a geotechnical fabric and grid, a fibreglass grid system to try and reinforce the pavement. That's what we're doing in some of the marginal areas."

The city has budgeted $1.2 million for the work.
