The St. Malo Daycare Centre hopes to make a partial move to its new building in the coming weeks. It was completed in April but the new facility has been denied an occupancy permit until now because the community's water system does not have enough constant pressure to power the sprinkler system in event of a fire. Director Helen Lafantasie says they are now spending an additional $200,000.00 to install a cistern and pump system for the sprinkler system.

"The cistern and fire pump are not in yet because it takes time to get it ordered and to put it in so we've asked for a temporary occupancy. So we will be moving our school-aged children and our pre-schoolers. The need to have a sprinkler system is because of the infants. Right now, we will be moving part of our program over there but the infants will have to remain at the centre we're at right now."

She adds they have been told by the Office of the Fire Commissioner it will be no problem to get the temporary permit. Lafantasie says they expect to move over 60 pre-school and school-aged children to the new building by mid-September. She adds about a dozen infants will continue to be cared for at the old centre until the pump and sprinkler system has been installed.
