Environment Canada has upgraded their special weather statement to a wind warning for Wednesday morning.

Robyn Dyck a Meteorologist with Environment Canada says a low-pressure system will be moving through southwestern Manitoba early Wednesday morning and as it reaches the escarpment of Manitoba, high winds are expected to pick up as the system moves into the Pembina Valley and further east.

“In the widespread area of southern Manitoba, we’re mainly going to be looking at winds sustained at 70 km/h with gusts of up to 90 km/h which is about our warning criteria.”

Dyck advises people to take precautionary measures and batten down the hatches before the system moves into the region.

“First thing, I would just put away any lawn furniture you have hanging around outside, anything that’s loose will most likely be blown around. There’s still leaves on the trees so there will be branches and leaves being thrown around. I would just put things away and make sure your yard is cleaned up a little bit so you don’t have things flying around.”

Dyck adds you can probably hold off raking leaves until later this week since the high wind will probably be blowing off whatever’s left on the trees.
