A section of First Street in Steinbach will be closed for the majority of the day today as city crews replace a fire hydrant.

Waterworks Manager Mike Heppner says the hydrant, located near the intersection of First and Brandt, began leaking this past winter due to corrosion and old age. He notes 12 homes in the immediate area will be without water for the next several hours as the maintenance takes place.

Heppner says his crews have cut a hole in the roadway to gain access to the water main. While the road is expected to be reopened by the end of the day today, Heppner says a small barricade will remain in place around the construction site for some time.
