The Seine River School Division has identified a need for vocational programming within their three high schools.

Superintendent Mike Borgfjord says the division has been recognized as a leader for their extensive apprenticeship programs, but notes they would like to offer students the opportunity to learn the trades within their division.

"Over the last couple of years, we have made proposals under other provincial grants to get funding to create vocational programming in all three of our high schools. So this year when it came to our capital plan we decided to put it as one of our priorities, and we're hoping somewhere down the line it will be offered in our schools."

Right now, Borgfjord says students can gain high school credits by being in a formal apprenticeship program where they work with local employers in their community. "We have students doing all kinds of trades in the division, they get paid as they go through the program and they get high school credits for it. So we do offer vocational opportunities, but we would like to offer a little more."

Borgfjord says they are in the design phase of a new school in La Salle, and once that construction has been approved, vocational programming will move to the number one spot on their priority list in the division.
