Three people from Steinbach received an award Thursday evening from Manitoba Lieutenant Governor Janice Filmon. Teena Cole, Eva Wolfe and John Rempel, who are siblings, received the Lifesaving Society Rescue and Commonwealth Award. They got the award for a rescue last April 24th. Cole recounts what happened that Sunday evening.

"We were driving down the #59 Highway and, just before we turned onto the #52, we saw this huge cloud of dust rise up and we knew something had happened. As we approached, we saw a car in a high level of water in the ditch there. The water was fast-moving and we saw her car in the water, moving with the current of the water and there was a young girl trapped in the car."

She adds they called 911 and, together with other motorists who had stopped, were able to rescue the girl. Cole says it felt a bit strange to get the award.

"Surreal and almost wrong because there were so many people involved in the rescue and it feels like we did what anybody else would have done. They did ask for the names of the other people involved and, unfortunately, we just didn't have them to give. So, it's sad that we can't actually applaud everybody that was involved simply because we don't know."

She says they accepted the award on behalf of all the people on scene that day as well as the many other unsung heroes who stop at accident sites every day to help.
