The SRSS is trying something new: inviting inspirational speakers to stimulate thoughtful conversation throughout the school.

Vice Principal Wayne Davies recently began this initiative and says he plans on inviting a handful of presenters every year to cover a wide range of relevant topics.

“We have a huge school with many amazing programs and we’re trying to continue to build a positive school culture,” explains Davies, “so we decided to bring in high quality, interesting speakers to talk about various issues.”

Mitch Bourbonniere

The first of these presentations was given to an assembly of students last week Thursday by Mitch Bourbonniere; a social justice advocate who has done volunteer work for the past 42 years.

Bourbonniere currently volunteers with the indigenous peoples of Winnipeg and helps with organizations like Got Bannock, Drag the Red, and Mama Bear Clan. He spoke to the students about his experiences and the everyday heroism that comes from simple kindness.

“You can love yourself by loving others. When you're feeling miserable go out and help someone,” offers Bourbonniere.

In addition to the school-wide assembly, Davies toured Bourboniere around the SRSS and had him drop into various classes and clubs to give mini-lectures.

“This was a really special day,” comments Bourbonniere, “I felt so welcomed by the students and staff. I don’t have a day like this very often.”

Davies commends Bourbonniere for his message. He hopes that both this event and those in the future will increase unity and discourse throughout the student body.
