A new law protecting landowners could be on its way to the RM of Ste Anne.

The law disallows intruders injured on another’s property the opportunity to sue provided the property owner has already been cleared of charges in court.

“With all of the violence and home invasions going on these days, it’s a good law to protect the citizens of Manitoba,” says Councillor Brad Ingles.

“This isn’t a law to allow people to assault or injure people when they break into their house,” explains Ingles, “It’s basically, if you are cleared in court from charges after someone trespasses or breaks into your property, then you can’t be sued in civil court.”

Council voted unanimously in favour for pursuing the law, with the exception of one Councillor’s withheld vote. “I couldn’t really see any reason to be against a law like this because it protects the citizens of Manitoba,” offers Ingles who adds no objections were discussed during the meeting.

The law often referred to as a 'castle law' was passed in Alberta late last year and has already had third reading in Saskatchewan.
