A house on Hanover Street in Steinbach was heavily damaged by fire early Friday morning. Fire Chief Kel Toews says it was a 1,000 square foot bungalow at 246 Hanover, behind E.A. Friesen Park, that was being readied to move.

"We got the call at about 1:00 in the morning and, when we got here, there was fire in the basement. We were able to extinguish it. It did extend through the floor into the main floor. It's a teardown."

Toews says the cause is suspicious and the Office of the Fire Commissioner is investigating. There were no injuries.

Several homes in that block of Hanover Street are being cleared to make way for two apartment blocks.
