Students at Elmdale School are taking the next step to say they want to show a positive attitude towards others.

Principal Colin Campbell says they give a green slip to students who have displayed a positive behaviour such as showing kindness to someone else and 'filling their bucket.' Campbell notes, after a spirit week where one day was to dress up like a green slip, he had an idea.

"I approached the parent council about having every new student in our school receive a green shirt when they arrive. To really kick it off we needed to make sure everyone got a green T-shirt to start."

Campbell says every incoming Kindergarten class, as well as new students who come throughout the school year, will be given a green shirt to welcome them as part of the school.

"On our green slip it says why you got this green T-shirt - for being a caring person who says and does nice things to make Elmdale the best place to be. I just think that really emulates what we're wanting from all our students and we have a great, great school."

He adds transitioning to a new school can be tough on children and being given a gift on their first day to welcome them as part of the school can ease the uncertainty of a new environment, and help them to feel included.
