The RM of Stuartburn is working on re-aligning its ward boundaries in time for the municipal election this fall. Chief Administrative Officer Lucie Maynard says the process has become a little complicated and explains why.

"The numbers can be quite deceiving because there are several residents that actually don't qualify to be on the voters' list because they are not Canadians. In speaking with the Municipal Services office, they want you to take your total population which, according to the census would include those immigrants, and divide that equally into the number of wards. So you factor them in in the numbers, but as far as the voters' list, they are not there."

Maynard adds, while non-Canadians are not allowed to vote in the municipal election, they still pay taxes and receive the same services as all other residents.

She says they are looking at making one change in the ward boundaries this year because of population growth in ward four in the Zhoda-Lonesand-Sundown area. Maynard says the plan is to take a small portion of that ward and add it to ward two, which is the area south of Vita.

Stuartburn has 1,648 people but only 1,534 are eligible to vote.
