Steinbach city council has approved its tax collection bylaw for 2017, factoring in mill rate increases by both the city and the Hanover School Division. Brian Hrehirchuk, the city's Director of Finance, says the overall tax increase works out to about 3.5 percent or $8 per month on an average home.

"Including the municipal and Hanover School Division increases, it's just over a 1 mill increase. So, for a residential property valued at approximately $200,000, that will add about $95 to their yearly tax bill."

Hrehirchuk says just over 50 percent of the taxes collected in Steinbach go to the school division and just under half go to the city. Tax bills will be mailed out in a couple of months and are due at the end of September.
