Welcome To The City Of Steinbach, 102,447 Friendly Faces Welcome You.

If engineering consultants from MMM Group Limited are accurate, that is a sign that could be erected on the city's edge within five decades.

Steinbach Mayor Chris Goertzen says the city instigated a growth study to determine what the city could look like fifty years from now. He notes a population of more than 100,000 sounds astounding and though it might be difficult to believe, Goertzen says who would have thought Steinbach's population would surpass 15,000 just fifteen years ago.

"We need to make sure that we are prepared for that growth," says Goertzen. "That we do it in an orderly fashion that allows for good neighbourhoods and well thought out commercial and residential zones."

David Jopling, Manager of Planning and Development with MMM says the population estimate is based on an annual growth rate of 4.2 per cent. That growth rate is what Steinbach experienced between 2001 and 2011, making Steinbach the fastest growing city in Manitoba during that time.

According to the report, Steinbach will need an additional 33,546 dwelling units by 2064, yet there is only a 15 year supply of potential residential lands available. However, this report was put together last fall. Goertzen says since that time, Steinbach has had a friendly annexation agreement with the Rural Municipality of Hanover for 7300 acres of land, mostly along Steinbach's western border.

"That land is actually reflected very clearly in this growth study on why it is needed over the long term," notes Goertzen. "So the growth study is a nice complement to actually the friendly annexation and friendly agreement we do have with Hanover already."

The report also suggests an additional wastewater trunk line will be needed in order to service all the lands in the south end of the city. There will also be a need for three more ten acre school sites.
