The Mayor of Steinbach says city council members operate under a clear code of conduct that doesn't tolerate harassment of each other or city employees. Chris Goertzen made the comment in responding to the many recent stories about sexual misconduct in federal and provincial politics.

Mayor Chris Goertzen"It certainly is disconcerting to hear of disrespectful behaviour no matter what level of politics it's at, whether it's the municipal level, whether it's at the provincial, federal level or international level. The reality for us at the City of Steinbach, is that we have clear code of conduct that we follow, that we approve and that we monitor on a regular basis."

Goertzen says the city's code of conduct is reviewed after every election to make sure it's up to date and so that it is clearly understood by all members.
He adds it includes the steps that will take place if a councillor or staff member reports inappropriate behaviour.

"The code of conduct does outline clearly what needs to take place if there's inappropriate behaviour. That's laid out clearly and action is then taken by council or the appropriate group that is in charge."

He notes there is also a level of accountability among all councillors and city staff.

"We as council members hold each other accountable, absolutely, that's our job and the community holds us accountable. At the same time, it is hard to legislate respectful behaviour. But we have clearly outlined it in the code of conduct. We want to make sure that we have a good place where people want to work, where they're respected and where they are heard."
