Steinbach's mayor has become a decorated athlete following Friday's battle of the mayors in a friendly gentlemen's game of Crokicurl.

Crokicurl is a new sport which combines the game of crokinole and the sport of curling. Crokicurl is essentially a life-sized version of crokinole, where players take turns flicking small discs across a circular board, trying to land them in the center or highest-scoring areas of the board. Crokicurl uses curling rocks made from lighter materials and is played with two teams who try to score points by throwing the rocks into the center of the ice, where the highest-scoring circle is.

The Mayors of Steinbach, Winnipeg  and Winkler went head to head on Friday afternoon at the Forks to see which community would hoist the Crokicurl Cup. After a great match, Steinbach Mayor Chris Goertzen emerged victorious and says it was nice to take home the trophy.

"Well I have to tell you, my life has not been filled with a lot of sports but the reality is, is that once in a while you get a break and here we go we got a break. It was fun let me tell you, all in good fun too. Winter is sometimes long and if we have different things in our communities that we can enjoy, that's important."

Goertzen adds the trophy will proudly be displayed at Steinbach City Hall.
