A man from Steinbach is biking across Canada with his in-laws to help end starvation worldwide.

Caleb Enns says he married into a family of avid cyclists from Abbotsford and notes that the five of them have now biked from Victoria BC down to Steinbach Manitoba in order to raise funds for the Canada

“When he was a kid, my father-in-law had a dream to bike across Canada," offers Enns, "and now we’re actually doing it!”

The Canada Foodgrains Bank is a non-profit organization that supports those living in developing countries by providing them with food and teaching farmers how to grow their own crops sustainably.

“They’re on a campaign to end global hunger called the ‘We Care' campaign," explains Enns. “What we’re trying to do is raise $60,000 by biking roughly 6,000 kilometres”

To meet that goal,  Enns and his fellow riders cycle over 100 kilometres on most days; a task which requires steely determination.

"You just got to keep your legs going," he comments, “our diet is: eat just about anything you can see and eat as much as you can.”

However, Enns says the journey is only becoming easier as they move further down the road. On one of the earlier days of the cycle, they performed a 1,400-metre climb to get over a mountain pass. Compared to that, he says crossing hundreds of kilometres across open prairies seem like nothing.

“It’s really funny because you can look straight and see the road for the next ten kilometres and know that you will be passing a hill in half an hour. It allows you to mentally prepare.”

Meanwhile, Enns says biking back into the very community where he was born and raised was something particularly special.

“It’s really cool because you see the little things like the new trees that were planted or the new fire hall in Blumenort, things that you would never hear about when you’re far away. It is neat to see that Steinbach is still growing and doing well.”

Enns and his in-laws have momentarily put up their kickstands in Steinbach to spend time with his blood-relatives. After a few days of relaxing, they plan on continuing on their journey towards Halifax.

Anyone who would like to hear more about their cycling adventures or donate to their cause can either attend a Canadian Foodgrains Bank banquet being held at the Niverville Heritage Centre Thursday evening or follow the link on their “Cycling Canada Together" Facebook page.
