Steinbach Mayor Chris Goertzen has appointed Cari Penner as Deputy Mayor. City council held its annual organizational meeting Tuesday night.

Deputy Mayor Cari PennerPenner succeeds councillor John Fehr. Goertzen says Penner is very deserving of the role.

"She is a four-term council member here on city council and so, for this last year of the current term, it is appropriate to have her as Deputy Mayor."

Goertzen adds Fehr did a commendable job as Deputy Mayor the past two years.

"Councillor Fehr served very well as Deputy Mayor the past two years. He stepped in either when I wasn't able to attend or was absent from a meeting. Obviously, we're a team here at city council and he did a great job of helping assist in the leadership. This year, we've asked him very specifically to work on the Joint Action Committee with the RM of La Broquerie, so that special task will fall to him this year. We look forward to having improved and good relationships with our neighbours."

There were no other changes in city council committee appointments.

The Mayor did announce that John Wiebe, a retired school teacher, has been appointed to the board of the Jake Epp Public Library.
