The Steinbach Fire Department had a good turnout at its open house on Tuesday despite rain in the forecast. More than 500 people showed up.

The open house featured Sparky the dog, safety simulation trailer and those who attended had the opportunity to sit in the front seat of a fire truck.

Fire Prevention Officer Cindi Klassen-Krahn says fire safety is important.

"We had people come through our safety trailer, and we have simulation smoke in there so kids and see what that is like. There's a door that heats up so they can feel what that and they have to look for a second way out. We also have a simulation kitchen which can show you how not to have your pot handles, you don't want them facing out, you always want them turned in."

She adds it's almost important to have a lid and oven mitt close by when cooking with grease in case it should start on fire.

"We also talk about the important of a fire escape plan and how everybody in your house should know that plan. Talking a bit to the younger kids and asking them if they know their street name and the number of their house because sometimes they are the ones that have to dial the emergency number."

Klassen-Krahn says people like to see the smoke simulation and how smoke actually rises creating a space of good air close to the floor.

Fire Chief Kel Toews says a number of potential recruits stopped by to pick up application forms. He notes about three dozen people have already responded to the call for new recruits. Applications close Friday, October 14th.
