Steinbach engineer maps out city projects for Summer 2022

Summer construction has begun in Steinbach.

City of Steinbach Engineer Aaron Rach says a number of major capital works projects are now underway.

“Brookdale Crescent is going to be fully reconstructed, that includes the roads, sewer and water. Construction is just beginning now and expected completion is mid-August. There will be temporary closures, local residents have all been notified and traffic disruptions will be isolated to the crescent, there shouldn't be any implications for Elmdale Street.

Meanwhile, motorists who routinely drive down the eastern portion of Loewen Boulevard can expect some delays this summer. Rach says the city will be working on a sewer extension on Loewen Boulevard between Walnut Street and Old Tom Road to service future developments on the east end of town.

“That project is expected to start mid-July and be completed in late August. For that project, we are going to see Loewen going down to one lane during the week and then the contractor will be reopening it to two-way traffic for the weekends and there will be a detour set up down Reimer Avenue via Walnut and Hespeler when it is shut down to one lane.”

Rach says a number of sidewalk projects will also be completed this summer.

“We've got a Brandt Street sidewalk on the west side, in between Woodhaven Avenue and First Street. That is going to be starting this week and should be completed in mid-July. That one, we will see the curb lane being closed for the duration of the project. Then McKenzie Avenue, the north boulevard, there will be a sidewalk being installed in between Windsor Gate and Parkhill Crescent, same timeline for that one."

The third and final sidewalk project in Steinbach this year will connect the Clearspring Middle School to Wyndham Estate Drive via Ashford Lane.

The City of Steinbach has put together an interactive map highlighting all of the capital works projects slated to take place this summer. 

The Acres Drive extension between Industrial Road and Keating Road is already well on it’s way to being completed and Rach estimates it should be done by late July. A section of McKenzie Boulevard west will also be paved by the developers of Lexington Village, and a landfill expansion will take place but won't affect residents. 

As always, Rach says all of these schedules and estimated timelines are dependent on weather and product supply.

“It is worth noting that we are seeing unprecedented lead times on a lot of the construction materials that are used for these projects so the schedules are going to be tricky to hit this year and fingers crossed that everything goes well and we ask that the public be understanding of these influences on that."
