Safe Families Steinbach is sending costumed couriers with balloons to people’s homes.

The initiative was inspired by the many parades, scavenger hunts, and other creative community gestures seen in the past two months.

“Balloons and Blessings is a fundraiser that kind of came out of social distancing,” says Director Michelle, “so for a $20 dollar donation we will deliver a bouquet of 5 helium balloons to a recipient of your choice, and we are doing the deliveries in style.”

Peters says they have recruited a lady with her alpaca along with a firefighter and fire-crew mascot Sparky the Dog to do deliveries.

The charity seeks to keep struggling families from falling into the child welfare system by providing them with temporary relief in an assortment of ways.

“Even a generation ago we had aunties, and neighbours, and grandmas who would be able to swoop in and help parents with young kids,” explains Peters, “and our society has lost that, we’ve become increasingly isolated even without the whole pandemic thing.”

Safe Families is in need of $32,500 to get started in Steinbach, a sum Peters estimates they have already raised a third of. “We are completely non-profit, we run completely on donations,” says Peters, “so most of the people that provide support are actually volunteers from different local churches.”

Peters says Blessings and Balloons is for anyone in Steinbach and the surrounding towns. “We’re willing to do some rural areas and if your recipient falls outside of our delivery zone then we will call you and see what we can work out.”

Delivery dates are set for Saturdays May 16th, 23rd, and 30th and those who would like to send some balloons can do so at steinbach@safefamilies.ca.

“It will bring a whole lot of smiles,” assures Peters, “I mean, how fun would it be to have an alpaca show up with a bunch of balloons at your door?”
