A resident of Steinbach has asked city council to limit parking at community mailboxes. Gordon Giesbrecht says at his age of 84, it can be a challenge to walk to the mailbox, especially in winter. He adds it can be difficult to find a parking space nearby and has asked council to allow only brief stops in front of the mailboxes. Councillor Michael Zwaagstra agrees.

"With the community mailboxes, we need to deal with the issue of access. We know that Canada Post is ultimately responsible for the mailboxes but there are legitimate questions to ask in regards to the city's role. The letter that we received raised the question about parking by mailboxes and whether there should be a 'No Parking' zone so that people aren't parked for longer periods of time in front of the mailbox. There are also other questions that have come up, especially when you have a significant amount of snow."

Councillor Jac Siemens gave a specific example of the problems with snow.

"One was in our area where the mailbox fronted the street and people would stop and pick up their mail. When the sidewalk was put in on Maplewood, they turned the mailbox around (to face the sidewalk) and now people have to walk down the block and around in winter because of the snow piled over top (on the street side). It will be a tough issue to address but I believe that we should have a report on it."

Council was advised that Canada Post is responsible for snow clearing at the community mailboxes.

City council has asked the administration to come up with a report on the parking matter.
